Pressure Relief Valves

The role of these devices is to ensure the safety of household residents, as they act to prevent a dangerous build up of pressure. Commonly known in the shortened form as PRV, or simply as safety relief valves, pressure relief valves work by automatically opening up a valve once pressure levels within the central heating or hot water system exceed a safe level. The valve will then return to its previous closed position once the pressure levels have dropped back to a safe operating level.

There are several different types of pressure relief valves, so no matter what your chosen application, there will be a solution to fit. A popular option is the spring loaded valve, whilst other choices include vacuum relief valves, low lift valves, full lift valves, and temperature actuated valves. The spring operated pressure relief valve, for example, comprises a spring loaded valve, a piston which acts as a sensor, and an additional spring. The valve remains closed whilst the pressure created by water and heat does not exceed its strength, yet should the pressure level increase beyond this, the spring will release the valve. Once the excess pressure is released, the spring is able to re-close the valve.

Pressure relief valves are constructed from a variety of materials, including the popular brassware options. Other materials used are aluminium, plastic, and stainless steel. The spring within a spring operated relief valve will usually be made from stainless steel, as it is better able to withstand corrosion. The choice of material for a pressure relief valve will often be influenced by the environment in which it will be fitted, and whether it will need to withstand unusually high temperatures or corrosive elements.
