Unions and valves are brassware fittings that are an essential addition to a plumber's standard stock list. Both are available in a range of sizes and materials and may be fitted with handles or gauges to accommodate different systems and plumbing solutions.

Valves are used to connect pipework within domestic and commercial water supply systems, allowing water to be shut off in the event of an emergency, prevent backflow and to adjust the water pressure within the system. Valves are ideal for occasions when sections of plumbing need to be isolated to allow repairs to be conducted.

Unions are threaded fittings which allow pipes to be separated and then reconnected without any horizontal movement within the pipework, thereby allowing components within the system to be maintained or replaced. They are available as standalone fittings or can be integrated into valves. They are often referred to as inline couplings.

Unions should only be fitted after appliance shut-off valves and meter locations or immediately downstream on a building's shut-off valves. Placing unions incorrectly within a water supply system can cause complications.

When unions are integrated into valves, they allow fluid to flow through when in the on position and, with a turn of a handle, can completely stop it. This means that maintenance can be conducted easily and with minimal effort should the system spring a leak or a component downstream require replacement.
