Hot water systems that store water in hot water cylinders have several advantages over combi boilers. The main one is their ability to deliver hot water faster, and to more outlets simultaneously. Some types of water cylinder provide opportunities to attach a choice of heating sources, including heat exchangers, solid fuels, or energy from solar panels.
There are several types but the main distinction is between vented and unvented cylinders.
Vented hot water cylinders are usually supplied with water indirectly from a supply tank or cistern in the loft. Heated water expands and in some cases boils, so loft tanks can also serve as expansion vessels to safely vent excess and prevent pressure building in the water cylinder. In vented systems, the water pressure is proportional to, and limited by, the height between the supply tank and outlet.
Unvented, or "direct", hot water cylinders fill directly from the mains, so there is no need for an additional tank. The water is still at mains pressure when heated and supplied. Water expansion or excess pressure is dealt with by an expansion unit fitted into the top, so they don't need expansion vessels either. Direct cylinders usually need slightly more capacity for the same size property.
